Leading Youth Volunteers at Olmsted Park

By Jamica and Tyrone

On April 4th, Tyrone and I (Jamica) had the experience of leading a group of Boston Latin School (BLS) students on a field project. We led a group of 7 at the Olmsted Brook house. We worked on shrub beds and park maintenance. We edged and weeded the shrub beds while the other groups cleared out the debris from the surrounding area. This was a great activity because it gave us first hand experience on leading a group and how the summer with the Green Team would be. To be a good leader, you need to portray excellent communication skills. This gave us a chance to demonstrate our knowledge of the park system to our fellow peers. From my personal experience, being a leader was a big responsibility because you had to make sure that our team was productive while maintaining an up-beat attitude. We’re looking forward to meeting up with the BLS students this Friday.
